5 Things I’ve Learned From Hitting Rock Bottom

Life is not just all about beauty, greatness, and success. We all commit mistakes. We all fail. We all go through breakage. And before we know it, we are all hitting rock bottom.

Just like everybody else, I have experienced being hurt. I have experienced being left behind. I have experienced people turning their backs on me when I needed them the most. I have experienced people feasting on my mistakes. I have experienced not getting what I want.

Hitting rock bottom feels like everything is messed up. Everything seems to be a deadlock. Everything seems hard to figure out. Everything seems to be changing drastically. Everything seems to be gone.

But then I asked myself, is this the life that I want? Would replaying those harrowing memories solve the problem? Could crying over and over again ease the pain? Should everything end here? The answer is no.

I’ve always believed in mind, heart, and soul that God is watching and guiding me. I have my family and true friends. And so, in those painful moments, I picked myself up and moved forward. And now, looking back, here are five things I have learned from hitting rock bottom. Hopefully can help you break free from your struggles, too, and become the best person you can be.

1. Learn from mistakes

Sometimes, without noticing it, you are repeating the same mistakes over and over. You keep blaming yourself, yet you do not change your ways. Sometimes, you make poor decisions that cause you to mess up in more ways than one.

You are already growing so it is high time to acknowledge your wrongdoings and learn from them. Take full responsibility for your new-found wisdom from your mistakes and use it to make sound decisions and meaningful choices as you go along your journey.

2. Success is not success without failure

We all see failure as detrimental to our success. Broken relationships, failed examinations, personal shortcomings – all these we regard as failures. But truthfully, these are ingredients to a successful life.

Although painful, failure teaches so many great things and even unlocks one’s potential. It creates extraordinary positive changes in every experience you encounter because it prepares you for what lies ahead.

3. Love yourself because you deserve it

If you keep showing love to other people, also give it to yourself. Self-love is not being selfish because you also deserve time, effort, and dedication. It is essential to a happier and healthier you.

After all the tears and sleepless nights from heartbreaks and troubles, pick yourself up and treat yourself better. If some people cannot give the exact amount of love that you can offer, that is okay because one day, it will return to you in ways you never thought of.

4. Moving forward brings you to opportunities and possibilities meant for you

When things do not go the way you want them to, do not fret. The universe is just wrapping and redirecting you to wonderful gifts truly meant for you.

And while waiting, move forward because there is so much beauty in tomorrow.

Moving forward seems difficult at first, but when you totally commit yourself to it, you will be in awe of your own strength. In God’s perfect timing, the opportunities and possibilities bound for you will be at your doorstep.

5. Pray and persevere

We all go through different experiences in life. Whether good or bad, we should not forget to pray and persevere to reach our goals and aspirations.

Praying is our communication with God and while we do it, we should strive hard to make our dreams come true, not only for ourselves but also for the people we love. It is also a perfect opportunity to share our feelings with God and ask for guidance in all our undertakings.

After hitting rock bottom, I told myself that it was time for me to move on and be in awe of what the universe had in store for me. To whoever is reading this, dust yourself off and tell yourself—and others—to move forward and be happy. You deserve to.
